Kurdistan Refugee Mission

Marc Dean, MD

July 18, 2019

Dr. Dean is also known for his passion for telemedicine and integrating new technologies into the practice of medicine. A founding partner of the International Medical Group, Dr. Dean has made several mission trips to Iraq since 2011, and is currently helping establish a telemedicine hospital there. He personally created a telefellowship in the region, where physicians in Iraq can observe and learn from Dr. Dean’s procedures via streaming technology. In turn, he is able to view their surgeries and advise on techniques from the U.S.

Since 2011, he has traveled to Syrian refugee camps inside Iraqi Kurdistan several times with a team of doctors for humanitarian medical missions.

During these missions, Dr. Dean and the rest of the medical team treat hundreds of patients lined up outside the medical facilities. Many times they use the Internet and streaming video to access other doctors around the world to help consult on cases. Cameras attached to surgical instruments allow in-person staff to view what is happening from computer screens in the surgery room. Remote medical professionals also view the surgical procedures streamed live through the Internet. Dr. Dean plans to attend another mission later in 2016.

Beyond the medical missions, the medical teams also use their time in Iraq to train and teach local hospital medical professionals how to use telemedicine and educate them on American medical best practices. Dr. Dean has also personally created a telefellowship in the region, where physicians in Iraq can observe and learn from Dr. Dean’s procedures via streaming technology. In turn, he is able to view their surgeries and advise on techniques from the U.S. Finally, Dr. Dean and the telemedicine platform company VSee are also working together to establish a telemedicine hospital in Iraq. Dr. Dean’s work in Kurdistan contributed to his next big telemedicine idea.
